Privacy Policy

tapa. is a cooking app that turns the ingredients you have into a real recipe. To do that it needs a little information from you: an account to save your recipes, your tastes and dietary needs, and the ingredients you want to cook with. This policy explains exactly what we collect, who processes it, and why.

The short version: we don't sell your data, we don't show ads, and the ingredients you share are used only to generate recipes for you.

Who we are

tapa. is published by For The Rest Of Us, operated by Alroy Ndhlovu (“we”, “us”). For any privacy question, contact us at legal@fortherestofus.app.

Your account

To use tapa. you create an account. We store the basics needed to run it:

  • Your email address, used to sign you in and secure your account.
  • How you chose to sign in. If you use Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, we receive your email address and, from Apple on your very first sign-in only, your name. Nothing else is shared with us, and we never see your Apple or Google password. If you use Apple’s Hide My Email, the relay address is all we ever hold.
  • An optional display name and profile picture, if you choose to add them, used to personalise the app.
  • Your preferences: measurement system, default servings, cooking skill, dietary needs, and app settings such as theme.
  • Your activity in the app: recipes you save, the ratings and hearts you give them, and how many times you've marked a recipe as cooked.

Ingredients and recipes

The heart of tapa. is turning what you have into something to cook. When you ask for a recipe, we send the ingredients and preferences you provide to our AI to generate it:

  • Ingredients you type in. If you dictate them instead, that is your keyboard’s own microphone button doing the work — tapa. never records audio and asks for no microphone permission at all.
  • Photos of your ingredients, if you use the camera feature (available on Pro). The image is sent to be read for the ingredients in it, then used to generate a recipe. We don't keep the photo afterwards.
  • A photo from your photo library, only if you pick one as your profile picture.
  • Your dietary needs, servings, cooking skill, and similar preferences, so the recipe fits how you actually cook.
  • Recipes you save are stored on your account and on your device so you can open them again, including offline.

The AI that generates your recipes

Recipes and ingredient photo recognition are powered by Anthropic’s Claude models, which we call through our own secure backend. The ingredients and preferences for a request are sent to Anthropic only to produce your result. Anthropic does not use data sent through its API to train its models. We don’t send your name, email, or account identifiers to the AI along with your ingredients.

Recipe history and personalisation

So the app can show you what you generated recently, and so Pro recipes can learn what you like, we keep a record of each recipe request on your account:

  • The ingredients you asked with, any follow-up answers you gave, and the recipe that came back.
  • If you tapped “Try another”, the dish you turned down — so we don't serve you the same thing again.
  • On Pro, this history is what makes recipes lean toward food you rate highly and away from food you rejected. It is yours alone; it never shapes anyone else’s recipes and is never used to train an AI model. You can switch it off at any time under Profile → Personalisation → Personalised recipes, and the app stops reading your history immediately.

Sharing a recipe

When you tap Share on a recipe, we save a copy of that recipe and create a link to it. The copy holds the recipe itself: its title, description, ingredients, method, cook time, difficulty, servings, substitutions and estimated nutrition.

  • Anyone with the link can see that recipe, in the app or on this website. The copy doesn’t include your name, email, allergies or dietary settings.
  • Shared recipe pages ask search engines not to list them.
  • Sharing the same recipe again reuses the same link. Deleting your account deletes the copies, and their links stop working.

How the app is used

To see which parts of the app people actually use, we send usage events to PostHog: which screen you opened, whether a recipe was generated or failed, whether you started or finished cook mode, and whether you opened the Pro page. It is a fixed list we wrote by hand, and every item on it is a label, a number or a yes/no.

It never contains anything you typed. Your ingredients are sent as a count and your dietary settings as a count — never the items themselves, because your allergies are health information and the analytics has no business holding them. We don’t record your screen, and we don’t track you across other apps or websites. PostHog runs on European servers and we have configured it to discard IP addresses.

Crash reports

If the app crashes or runs into an error, a report is sent to Sentry so we can find and fix the problem. A report holds the error and where in the app it happened, the app version, and your device model and operating system version. It doesn’t include your name, email, IP address, ingredients or dietary settings, and it isn’t linked to your account.

Subscriptions and payments

tapa. Pro is an optional paid subscription. Purchases are handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play and managed through RevenueCat, which tells us whether your subscription is active so we can unlock Pro features. We never see or store your card or payment details. Those stay with Apple, Google, and their payment processors.

Who processes your data

We keep the list of companies we rely on short, and each only handles what it needs to:

  • Supabase: hosts our database, authentication, and storage (your account, saved recipes, preferences, and profile picture).
  • Anthropic: generates recipes and reads ingredient photos, as described above.
  • RevenueCat: manages your subscription status.
  • Sentry: receives crash and error reports, as described above.
  • PostHog: receives the usage events described above. It gets your account id, so a phone and a tablet count as one person, but not your name or email address — and never your ingredients or dietary settings. It also counts visits to tapa’s pages on this website, and there it runs without cookies of any kind — nothing is stored in your browser and nothing follows you between visits.
  • Apple & Google: verify your identity if you use Sign in with Apple or Google, process payments, and distribute the app through their stores.

What we never do

  • We never sell or rent your data to anyone.
  • We don't show ads, and the app contains no advertising or cross-app tracking. The usage analytics described above measure how the app is used, nothing more.
  • We never record your screen, and we never let analytics or crash reports see what you type. Your ingredients and dietary settings are counted, never collected.
  • We don't use your saved recipes or ingredients for anything other than running the app for you.

Keeping and deleting your data

Your data lives with your account until you remove it. You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete account, which permanently removes your account, saved recipes, and associated data. Uninstalling the app clears the copies stored on your device.

Uninstalled the app, or can’t sign in? You can still ask us to delete it. What goes, what stays, and how to request it are set out at fortherestofus.app/apps/tapa/delete-account/.

Children

tapa. is not directed at children and is not intended for anyone under the age required to form a binding agreement in their country.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal data under laws such as POPIA or the GDPR, including access, correction, and deletion. You can handle most of this yourself in the app, and we're happy to help with anything else. Just get in touch.

Changes to this policy

If we change how tapa. handles your data, we'll update this page and the date above. Significant changes will be reflected in the app or its store listing.
